![]() GaN chips are fabricated through wafer-scale microfabrication processes, including photolithography, etching, and deposition of metal and oxide layers. The electrical and optical properties of the on-chip device, as well as its ability to detect a wide range of airflow rates, are studied to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed integration scheme. The GaN chip with the dual functions of emission and detection is fabricated on a GaN/sapphire template through wafer-scale fabrication processes, while the PDMS membrane is formed by a low-cost droplet-based molding process. In this work, a novel compact integration of a GaN chip with a flexible PDMS membrane that enables the chip to sense airflow without the need for external light coupling components is proposed, as shown in Fig. Therefore, a highly flexible structure should be explored as an alternative sensing medium. Moreover, structural deformation introduces unwanted strain in the GaN epitaxial layer, which degrades the internal quantum efficiency of the device 36. Although a bendable GaN film can be realized by the selective wet etching of silicon or laser lift-off of sapphire 35, 36, the use of a free-standing GaN film as a sensing medium responding to high airflow is less reliable due to its fragility. The only report about a GaN-based airflow sensor employs a suspended GaN membrane that shows a detectable airflow rate of up to 2.779 ms −1 and a switch-on time of 1 s 34. The major limitation is that the existence of rigid and hard growth substrates, such as sapphire and silicon, limits the deformation of the device in response to airflow. However, to date, reports on the use of integrated GaN-based devices for airflow detection remain extremely limited. Recently, the monolithic integration of GaN-based optical and electronic components on a chip-scale platform has been demonstrated for on-chip visible light communication 30, 31, heart rate detection 32, and illumination and imaging 33. Considering the materials used to construct solid-state high-performance optical devices, GaN-based direct bandgap semiconductors and their alloys are excellent candidates because of their high efficiency, fast transient response, good physical and chemical stability, and long operational lifespan 28, 29. Furthermore, despite their intrinsic fast response based on optical means, the response time of the reported optical systems in response to airflow has not been investigated and presented.Įliminating the external light-coupling components is a promising approach for realizing the miniaturization of optical airflow sensors. The bulky and complex configurations inevitably weaken the efficiency, robustness, and compactness of the system and limit its scope of applications. Nevertheless, the reported fiber-optic sensing systems mostly involve the complex assembly of external components and require precise optical alignment to couple the light from a light source to a spectroscopic analyzer through optical fiber as the sensing medium. To improve the sensitivity of sensors to optical changes induced by airflow, several advanced architectures, such as fiber Bragg gratings 22, 23, Fabry–Pérot interferometers 24, 25, microcantilevers 26, and other nanostructures 27, have been incorporated. Recently, optical airflow sensors based on fiber optics have attracted substantial research interest due to their distinctive advantages, such as their lightweight, high sensitivity, and fast optical response 20, 21. ![]() However, the achievement of a sensor with both fast response and a wide measurement range remains an unsolved challenge. Sensing devices employing the principles of thermoresistance 6, 7, 8, 9, piezoresistance 10, 11, 12, 13, electrical resistance 14, 15, 16, capacitance 17, magnetoelasticity 18, and mechanoluminescence 19 have been developed for airflow detection. The velocity measurement and distribution analysis of airflow is of great significance in the fields of atmospheric environmental monitoring, aerodynamic studies, turbine inspection, navigation control, biomedical engineering, and so on 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

![]() As described more below, certain melds require cards to be of the trump suit, and others are worth more points when they are in the trump suit. The trump suit is significant both in calculating meld points and in the trick-taking phase of the game. The winning bidder gets to decide which of the four suits will be the trump suit during the hand. The high bidder gets to pick up the cards in the kiddy and decide if they want to trade them with cards in their existing hand, discarding the cards they don’t want to use. Often in Cutthroat Pinochle, and in some variations of Partner Pinochle, the Kitty is used to give the high bidder an opportunity to strengthen their hand. When all but one players pass, the remaining player wins the bidding. ![]() The bidding goes around clockwise, and each player must decide to either raise the bid by the bidding increment or pass. The player to the left of the dealer is the first to place a bid or may choose to pass. There is usually a minimum starting bid and a set bidding increment that all players agree to before the game begins. However, if a player over-bids and fails to make their bid amount by the end of the hand, they will be penalized by losing the amount of points wagered and forfeiting any points earned in that hand.Īfter all cards are dealt, players pick up their hand and must evaluate how many points they think they might earn. The highest bidder gets honor of choosing the Trump suit, and often gets to either pass cards with their partner or take cards from the kitty to form a better hand. Most variations of Pinochle involve a bidding phase in which players wager on how many points they believe they can earn by the end of the hand. However, in Cutthroat, often the last set of cards (3 cards in single-deck, or 5 cards in double deck) are placed face-down on the table into the “kitty”, which will be used later in the game. If there are four players, in most variations, cards are dealt evenly to each player until there are no cards left in the deck: 12 cards to each player if single deck or 20 cards to each player if double deck. In single-deck Pinochle, the dealer typically deals 3 cards to each player at a time, whereas in double-deck it’s usually 5 cards at a time. At the start of each hand, the dealer shuffles the deck and begins dealing all cards face-down, starting with the player to their left, and then around the table clockwise, dealing to themselves last. Normally, a random player is selected to be first dealer and then for each subsequent hand the player to the dealer’s left deals the next hand. However, in most 4-player variations, partners are chosen and two players form a team to compete against the others. 3-player or 3-handed Pinochle is often referred to as Cutthroat because it requires each player to play against the other two (i.e. Most variations of Pinochle require either 3 or 4 players (there are 2 player versions and versions with more than 4 players but these are less common). However, most players will remove Nines when playing double deck, leaving a total of 80 cards. Some players prefer to play double-deck Pinochle, which means two decks are used instead of one. In Pinochle, Aces are the highest card, followed by Tens, then Kings, Queens, Jacks, and Nines. When playing with physical cards, one can either purchase a special Pinochle deck or use two standard 52-card decks and remove all of the numbered cards below Nine. Unlike a standard 52-card deck, there are no cards between Two through Eight. There are two of each card for every suit. Pinochle is played using a specialized deck of 48 cards consisting of Aces, Tens, Kings, Queens, Jacks, and Nines. In subsequent articles, we’ll go into more detailed descriptions of specific versions and elaborate of on how to employ effective strategies for each. We’ll describe some of the most common styles of playing and basic strategies. In this introduction, we’ll start with covering the basics and most universal concepts. My preferred stretch stitch, the lightning stitch, isn’t an option on the HD1000 or other mechanical machines due to its shape. Your best choices with this machine are the stretch triple-stitch, which looks nice but uses a massive amount of thread, or a zigzag stitch, which is serviceable but looks amateurish on hemlines. But even though the HD1000 can handle, for example, jersey fabrics without making sloppy-looking ripples, its options for stretch stitches are limited. The presser foot can also lift extra high to make room for thick materials. Unlike the Brother CS7000X and the Singer Quantum Stylist 9960, it has an all-metal base, which lends it a sturdy, upscale feel. It’s a powerful machine that handles heavy fabrics and multilayered projects with ease, and it breezes through lighter materials just fine, too. If you prefer the simplicity of a mechanical sewing machine: The Janome HD1000 is a worthy alternative to our computerized picks, though it comes with a few caveats. Finally, if you’re forever forgetting to backstitch at the beginning and end of your seams, you can turn on a feature on the CS7000X to automatically do it for you. This setting isn’t the default on all computerized machines: The EverSewn Sparrow 30s, to name one prominent competitor, requires that you push the needle up/down button during each sewing run to trigger stopping with the needle in a down position. For example, if you stop sewing in the middle of a seam, the needle stops in the down position by default, which is helpful for turning corners on projects or pausing to make adjustments without accidentally moving your fabric. The manual also fills you in on the clever shortcuts the machine has to offer. The default needle position at startup, for one thing, is to the far left instead of in the center-a setting that you can easily change but leaves you wondering why it’s like that to begin with. (If this whole paragraph is Greek to you, see this handy overview of many kinds of presser feet.)Īlthough this machine is mostly plug-and-play, be sure to page through the manual to save yourself some frustration with a few of its quirks. A walking foot works with the feed dogs underneath to move fabric through the machine evenly, helping you get clean results on your project. Both Brother models we tested came with a walking foot, as did the Singer Quantum Stylist 9960 and the EverSewn Sparrow 30s, but none of the others in our testing pool did. Walking feet are rarely included with beginner-level machines but are particularly helpful for fabric that might be prone to shifting, whether that’s a stretchy jersey, a multilayered quilt sandwich, or a slippery lightweight fabric. ![]() It comes with the standard zigzag foot attached right out of the box but also includes a buttonhole foot, an overcasting foot, a monogramming foot, a zipper foot, a blind-stitch foot, a button-sewing foot, a quarter-inch piecing foot, a quilting foot, and, most impressively, a walking foot. ![]() Reading through a pattern and realizing that you don’t have the required presser foot to complete a step is especially frustrating, but it’s not a problem you’re likely to have with this machine. ![]() But the real beauty here is everything else that comes in the box. |
